We long for the people of our past because we think they’ll make our present that much better. But we don’t just miss the people - we miss what we had with those people. How you could make that girl laugh with a dumb face and a raise of the eyebrow, or the inside jokes you had with her about your shitty boss.
But it’s not the summer anymore and you haven’t worked with her in years. Instead, you’re both adults with boring lives and real responsibilities. And once you see her again, it isn’t even worth the awkward laugh to try to force the inside jokes that you once loved.
You try not to reminisce because you want to move forward with her. Move forward to the here and now, where you try to rebuild what time and distance tore down.

I wonder why I sometimes dance around thoughts in my head
I seem to get haunted by past memories that I have not completely let go of.
These feelings that leave me in an abyss of “what ifs?”
The game of what ifs will only drown me. Drag me into a mindless whirlpool of empty, never ending thoughts.
Once I am conscious and aware that’s it happening, I’ll put an end to this limbo, but I always feel that I lost a little part of me into the vast darkness.
